SoundScape

Location: Design for Performance and Interaction, The Bartlett School of Architecture
Program: Sound Workshop
Project Team: Wimonwan Wichaikhamjorn, Ping-Chieh Hsieh, TU JUNG, and Hui Sim Chan

SoundScape is an immersive sound installation that explores the collective behaviour of swarms through a dynamic, spatialized sound environment. Composed of a series of sound emitters-each producing distinct frequencies and tones—the installation mimics the fluid, decentralized movement patterns of natural swarms, such as those of bee, insects or birds.

The sound-makers are embedded throughout a carefully designed space that acoustically amplifies and shapes the evolving soundscape. As participants move through the room, they encounter shifting layers of sound-some subtle and ambient, others sharp and pulsating—inviting a sensory journey shaped by both position and proximity.

Each area within the installation offers a unique auditory experience, encouraging visitors to explore, pause, and attune themselves to the spatial and sonic nuances. The work blurs the line between organic systems and synthesized environments, inviting reflection on the beauty and complexity of collective motion—translated into sound.
SoundScape transforms the act of listening into a form of exploration, allowing participants to become part of a living, resonant system where space, sound, and movement intertwine.
